An Easy recipe for Healthy, Whole Wheat Flour Tortilla

Whole wheat flour tortilla is healthy and nutritious. I try to use whole wheat in most of my cooking. Moreover, If we have tortilla on hand, we can easily make a wrap, quesadilla or even chips for a quick meal. This whole wheat tortilla is called Roti in India. I'm going to show you a step by step instruction on how to make Whole Wheat flour tortilla. Hereafter, I'm planning to write posts on easy, healthy recipes very often. Last but not least, this tortilla is my husband's favorite.

Whole Wheat Flour Tortilla:
Ingredients:

a. Whole wheat flour - 1/2 pound (you don't need exact measurement. Take as much flour as you want and add salt as per the taste)
b. Salt - To taste
c. Olive oil - 1 Tea Spoon
d. 2% Milk - For the dough

1. Mix the flour and salt very well
2. Heat the milk in microwave. The milk should be hot while mixing as this is going to be an essential ingredient for a soft tortilla. (Even if you want to make chips, Make a soft tortilla, then bake it. You'll get the real taste)
3. Add enough milk into the Flour mix and kneed the dough well for 5 mins (Instead you can use bread maker or dough maker to kneed the dough). At the end, add 1 tea spoon of olive oil. and knead well.

Use less liquid(milk) than normally required water for pizza dough.

4. After kneading, cover it with a wet cloth and keep it aside for 10 - 15 mins (Keep it in a warm place. I usually keep the dough bowl in microwave or oven)
5. Take a small part from the dough and roll it. We don't want the dough to be sticky. So, take some flour in a small plate or bowl and roll over the dough in it.(just like the below image)
Keep in mind that we can't put the remaining rolling flour to the flour tin. So, take enough flour for the rolling.
6. We can use rolling pin to roll the dough. 7. While rolling, don't forget to spray some flour whenever its sticky. How is the shape of Tortilla? :) I'm very bad at rolling a round tortilla sheet. (the sheet should have 2-3 mm thinkness)

8. For the exact round shape, use any of your round kitchenware such as pan dome cover, bottle cap based on the size you want.9. I used one of my pan's dome cover to make the circle.
10. Now the dough is ready. Heat a pan in the stove and wait till its hot (stove level:medium)
11. Cook both the sides till they are light brown. Overcooking will make the tortilla harder.
Tortilla is ready.
You can freeze the remaining for future needs. Whenever you use frozen tortilla for the meal, don't cook it. Defrost it in the microwave. That will give you soft tortilla.

If you have kids, use small round shaper to make small tortilla. They'll ask you more.

Please feel free to email/comment me your feedback.

Thank you for this post! Our family loves whole wheat tortillas and often just butter them hot and use as a side with other meals. I want to freeze them and am wondering if freezing changes the texture?

Thank you.

No. It won't change the texture. Take enough tortilla from the freezer 5 mins before the meal, REFROST (not in cook mode) them in Microwave and serve within few mins. You'll get a very soft Tortilla. My husband loves Whole wheat Tortilla. :)

Do you think you could use skim milk for this as well? I never buy 2%.

Yes, if you don't have a choice. Its better than using a plain water.

You can even add your own spices when making dough.

I'm definitely trying this when we get back to town next week! I'm a bad guesstimator... Any idea as to how much milk to use? Just to give me an idea of where to start, and I can adjust to get the right consistency.

Thanks so much!

Kris,

Usually I add hot milk little by little while preparing dough. That way, all the flour will get the milk evenly. The dough should be more dry than the pizza dough.

I'm not sure about the exact amount to be used. I'll let you know in couple of days.

i usually use water when i make roti...but milk may make it softer...i'll def give it a try! also, i usually just have water and flour...no salt, oil, or milk. if you continue making these often enough to get the hang of cooking properly and eating right away (water nd flour alone wont freeze well, it will dry when reheated), you may be able to use just those ingr and have a perfect tortilla/roti anytime you wish!
